Context of the testimonies from Oaxaca

During the pandemic some sectors of the population in rural and indigenous communities did not have access to information on COVID-19 and its effects, or on preventative measures and medical attention in cases of contagion.

This was the situation of some communities in rural regions of the state of Oaxaca, under these circumstances diverse actions had to be taken by civil society actors, as in the case of CAMINOS, who accompany indigenous jornalero families from the Valles Centrales. Among the strategies they implemented was access to art as a medium to transmit information about COVID-19.

The design of murals permitted the inhabitants of these communities to organize collectively throughout the whole mural process, involving children, adolescents, men, and women in the mural effort to generate a visual impact for the local population and the surrounding communities.

The murals incorporated symbolic elements of the community such as their ancestors, culture and identity. At the end of the process some people shared their narratives, feelings, and opinions about the collective work and diversity of the participants in the following testimonies.
