María

Los Álamos, Valles Centrales, Oaxaca

Caminos, in collaboration with the community of Los Álamos, put up a mural sharing information about the prevention of COVID-19. This is the testimony of María.

“I already knew that it was a global disease with high mortality, that prevention included washing hands, using facemasks, and general hygiene.”

During the mural process she shared with us that, similarly to others participating, she learned that collaboration is very important in the community: “I learned the value of collaboration between neighbors, and I began to understand the topic of COVID to a greater extent. The message was the most important since it gave us new ideas about how to prevent COVID.”

María considers that the information which Caminos shared helped people to reflect on their hygiene habits and the changes they should take to adapt to COVID: “Because of the disease I was with my family more, people began to take care of their hygiene and to believe that the virus was serious and could spread.”

She had participated in other similar experiences, and she believed it is an effective way to address important topics for the community: “Yes, I participated in a mural in school about the rights of children.” She considers it is a method that can be used to address other diseases which affect the population.
